Fan-atic Fans of the NFL
Just wrapped up a fun shoot for Dueler Tires featuring the sorts of football fans who easily qualify as fanatics. I’m pleased to report that despite the presence of aluminum-foil swords on set, nobody was injured. I chalk this up to having really top-notch assistants on hand at all times. . Rain, Gators & Venomous Snakes
Awesome Kentucky rockers "Black Stone Cherry" new album, Folklore and Superstition. We shot their packaging on location just outside New Orleans, where we found the coolest swamp ever. It even had the sort of creepy wobbly shack you see in movies. As with all location shoots, we drew a crowd. Insects aside, this consisted mainly of very small alligators and very large poisonous snakes. Oh, and did I mention the rain? With lyrics like "have you seen the rain man looking to the sky begging for sunlight," apparently this guy knew what was on the horizon

Scarpati – the first name in Formula One Racing
Okay, I’d probably hurt somebody if I got behind the wheel of a Formula One land rocket. But that didn’t stop me from shooting a really nice advertising insert for the Gran Prix in Montreal. This job reminded me how cool Canadians are in general. Without a doubt, their home turf is definitely one of my three favorite countries in all of North America.

Introducing Innovative 2008 Spring Line
Woo Hoo...
What to wear, what ever to wear? Morning decisions just got a whole lot simpler!
These are my favorite studio edition T's ever, right down to the custom Soft Based Ink
A special thanks to the fine folks at www.dragonflysg.com for pulling custom ink prototypes
Charcoal gray is the New Black!! 8' ) .....shout out to Elvis!!

Buses and billboards and bears...oh my!
Okay, the Tennessean newspaper hasn't printed any Scarpati images on live bears as part of their big ad splash. Yet. But all over the state, people are seeing my work on billboards and giant bus wraps. In an age when other photographers seem to be opting for cheaper, lower resolution photo gear, it's nice to know you can still get ridiculously sharp resolution with all the conveniences of digital. We'll keep you posted on the bear situation.

Scarpati, now playing on iTunes?!?
Never thought I'd live to see the day...
the very cool people "Bill & Ed @ www.studiolighting.net" do a photography podcast.
Turns out I'm the featured guy in this month's show. Listen to the interview here:

More ADDY® Excitement
My first-ever awards show entry won an Addy for best CD/DVD packaging last year on the national level. That got my attention, so I figured I’d play again. Well, the Nashville Advertising Federation just informed me I’ve won this year in the photography category. This time, it’s for a cool pop-rock band called De Novo Dahl, signed to NY-based Roadrunner records. Thanks to everyone who helped make this shoot a success (you know who you are).

Motorcycle Tires R Us
Just finished a cool campaign for Bridgestone’s new high-performance motorcycle tire, officially known as the Battlax BT-021. These are hypersport tires designed for street superbikes. To those of you who don’t keep a fresh copy of Roadracing World or Motorcycle Technology in your bathroom, this means they’re super nice, and help you do things like take a curve really fast, even if that curve happens to be wet. Fun project! Thanks to the crew at GS&F for making it happen.

Featured in Photo District News (January 2008 issue)
Photo District News just featured me in their Technically Speaking section. This is like being a band and getting coverage in Rolling Stone…plus the article was written by Jack Neubart, who is something of a rock star among photo writers. Jack walks readers through two recent Scarpati projects: my album shoot for the New York Dolls (Roadrunner), and an ad campaign for AKG microphones (FB-I). PDN Online is a great place to learn stuff, whether you’re a pro photographer or just work like one.

  2007

2007 National ADDY® Winner
Not sure why it took me this long to enter my first awards competition. Submitted the album packaging for Mechanical Birds’ The Possibility of Flight, and ended up bringing home the top honor nationwide for all CD/DVD packaging. Even got a pretty good dinner out of it. Plus the band and their music are really cool, which always helps. This project gave me a chance to combine photography, photo illustration, typography and design.

De Novo Dahl
New York’s Roadrunner Records was justifiably excited about signing Nashville pop-rock stunners De Novo Dahl. So excited that they asked me to handle all promotional and packaging photography. This is definitely a band to watch – keep your eyes peeled for their first Roadrunner release, due out summer 2007. A great band to work with. What a shame we had to behead four of the five members during the shoot, but business is business.

Phase One Featured Photographer
Phase One makes incredible photographic gear which I happen to love. Their P 30 digital camera back, created specifically for high-end fashion and portrait work, is a tool I use practically every day. So imagine how pleased I was when Phase One let me know they wanted to spotlight me and my work on their website. Their feature, Preparation For A Magical Moment, is linked below.
Case Study on Photographer John Scarpati using a P 30

New York Dolls!
An amazing band – a piece of living rock and roll history – and they still know how to deliver the goods. The New York Dolls long-awaited (and long-titled) release, One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This, climbed all the way to number 12 on Rolling Stone magazine’s Top 50 Albums of 2006. It’s humbling to get the call for jobs like this. I feel honored. Seriously.

Monkeydog for peermusic
You may not have heard of peermusic, but they are by far the largest independent music publisher on the planet, with something like 30 offices worldwide. Monkeydog is the latest addition to peer’s stable of writer/producers. Monkeydog himself created the raw design elements for this compilation CD, I provided the design. Apparently he’s on his way to becoming very big in France and Belgium.

Bomshel puts Scarpati on the bus
Hot country music up-and-comers Bomshel are one of Curb Records’ biggest new acts. I was very happy when Curb called me to do a series of shots for Bomshel’s forthcoming album. I was even happier to see that everybody liked the photography so much, they decided to wrap their tour bus in it. It’s nice to know that using the insanely great resolution possible with today’s high-end photo gear, you can print way larger than life and still make your stars look beautiful as ever.

Scarpati approached by Aliens!
Alienware computer gear is famous throughout the high-end LAN gaming community, and is held up as the gold standard by tons of serious computer users/abusers. They’re also my computer of choice for digital image capture and manipulation. But now it’s official – I’m featured on the company’s website, profiled as an Alienware Power User. Maybe this explains the strange circle designs appearing in my yard at night.

Fuzion ultra high-performance tires
Bridgestone/Firestone created their Fuzion line of tires especially for sports car enthusiasts and “tuners,” those adrenalin-thirsty kids who transform nice normal automobiles into fire-breathing race monsters. The look Bridgestone goes for in Fuzion advertising is sleek, edgy and very high-end. I’d like to think this explains why they come back to me year after year to shoot campaigns for one of their most high-profile brands.
